In the Garden

Broccoli!!!

Our family LOVES broccoli so we planted over 30 plants this spring! We’ve already eaten quite a bit and have put up over 15 quarts of it in the freezer! Even after cutting the main head a broccoli plant continues to make what we call “side shoots.” So every few days we harvest the broccoli, blanch it and stick it in the freezer for this coming winter. Below are a few pictures of the boys with our first broccoli harvest. πŸ™‚

I’m working on putting my list of preserved/frozen foods in my sidebar. I’m just not sure how to change the font size. Besides the broccoli we’ve also frozen snow peas and made violet jelly and strawberry jam! It’s that time of year!!!

  1. ooooh..posts AND pictures. Now I am REALLY getting spoiled! πŸ™‚

I LOVE broccoli and suffering some serious garden envy here. We didn’t put a garden in this year because we thought we were going to be moving out come spring. Each month passes and our landlord (Matt’s previous employer) still says nothing of us moving. I wish he would have TOLD us we could stay through the summer!

I am only thankful that I have access to freebies along roadsides, and am close to an Amish roadside stand.

That broccoli looks amazing. I love it with cheddar cheese! Mmmmmm…

  2. I can’t see your photos, but will have to check back in and see if I can later. I, too, love broccoli! My dad brought a ton of it with him last year, and he, Dave, and I stayed up until the wee hours, cutting, blanching and bagging it. It was great to have it all throughout the winter.

Our garden isn’t doing too hot this year. We tried out that “no till” gardening, but I don’t think we let the hay and manure have enough time to decompose over winter. We were just too busy with other things to get that put on right away. 😦 So, the mice and moles and whatever else we have around here have been snacking on our seeds and tender shoots. I have gotten a handful of green peas (one of my favorite garden veggies!) and our tomato and watermelon plants look pretty nice. We will be happy with whatever we get this year. Hopefully, next year it won’t be quite as crazy around here.

  3. Your broccoli looks amazing, and I especially loved seeing pictures of the boys since I don’t get the chance to see them much anymore! Your pictures are wonderful πŸ™‚

  4. You are missing some of the link id tags in your markup which would alter the font in your sidebar items. I have just put in my brocolli plants for fall. We are anticipating every stalk. LOL
